Dutch festive season starts with Turn on the Lights
Spectacular, international theatre acts and the lighting of the 600.000 festive lights in five shopping cities gives the starting signal
Thursday last week Turn on the Lights marked the start of the Dutch festive season with over 20.000 people attending the event in five cities.
Five internationally renowned theatre acts performed at the de Bijenkorf stores in Amsterdam
, Den Haag
, culminating in the lighting of the festive lights on the store facades. With the illumination of the facades and the festive window displays, the most luxurious department store in the Netherlands is ready to have everyone enjoy the 2015 festive season.
Festive national tradition at a high international level
The lighting of the festive lights, followed by the spectacular firework shows, was the apotheosis of a festive national tradition. The eighth edition of Turn on the Lights matches itself with international kick-offs of the festive season as seen in London, New York and Paris.
Spectacular theatre and light show in Amsterdam
The central Dam Square, in the Dutch capital Amsterdam formed the arena for the largest of the theatre and light shows. At the stroke of 7.00 PM the internationally acclaimed theater group Close act performed its imposing show Globe, inspired by current themes from the world culture and the universal stories of Astrid Lindgren. The grand finale of the show included Eurovision Song Contest winner Loreen’s performance of her international hit single Euphoria, ending with an impressive firework show and the spectacular ignition of 300.000 lights which now dress the de Bijenkorf Amsterdam department store. Through the livestream on debijenkorf.nl, many thousands of people also watched the show.
Similar theatre and light shows were held in four other Dutch cities as well, which were attended by many. Also in those cities the highlight of Turn on the Lights was the nearly simultaneous lighting of the festive lights on the facades of de Bijenkorf stores, followed by an impressive fireworks show.
The national start of the festive season
In recent years, Turn on the Lights has evolved from a local (Amsterdam) to a national (five shopping cities) opening of the festive season with international stature.
Marketing Director Robert Bohemen of de Bijenkorf: ‘We look back at the start of the festive season filled with pride, this year marking the eighth edition. This is the moment we look forward to the whole year. We are happy to be fully ready to receive our Dutch and international guests in our festively decorated stores and to give our customers an unforgettable festive 2015.”
